“Stepping back into the workforce after a three-year absence was not easy. I had left my previous job of 20 years in the manufacturing industry to take care of my elderly mother.
After three years of unemployment, I wanted to get back into the workforce. I viewed this as a fresh start and I was keen to try a different job in an industry other than manufacturing, and pick up new skills at the same time. However, though I had sent out many applications, I didn’t really get much response.
I learnt about Workforce Singapore’s Careers Connect from my sister who happened to see an advertisement about them while walking past Our Tampines Hub.
She thought that it would be able to assist me in my job search, and it did. I was matched with a Career Coach who shared about the different types of jobs that I could explore and the industries that I could consider venturing into.
My Career Coach suggested that I join the learning journey at Giant Singapore held by Careers Connect as I was looking for a people-facing role, instead of one that faced machinery, like my previous job. The learning journey let me shadow existing Giant staff and allowed me to see for myself what I needed to do if I joined as a full-time staff. I also got to speak to the staff working there and ask them any questions I had about the job.
The team members were very friendly and after speaking to them, I was confident that I would be able to do the job even though I had no experience in sales or retail. Today I’m working as a sales assistant at the Tampines Hypermarket and I’m glad I managed to find a job near my home!”
