Understand why you need to change
To ensure you’re changing jobs or careers for the right reasons, take time to reflect on your motivation for leaving your current role. According to the Job Applicant Confidence Index report compiled by Michael Page Singapore, skills development was at the top of the reasons that Singapore respondents were switching jobs. The top three reasons include a desire to achieve better work-life balance; and the lack of growth prospects in their current organisations.
There are many honest reasons to leave, but it’s important to take the time to ensure you understand what those reasons are for you. This will make your job search easier and allow for a smoother transition to a new company.
Some signs that you’re ready include:
- You’re bored, disengaged and unchallenged
- You feel your talents are not being used to their maximum
- There are limited opportunities for growth or learning
- Your conversations around work tend to be negative
- You’re missing job security amd a feeling of fulfilment.
- The salary you have is insufficient, and there’s no room to negotiate.
- Your workload is too heavy with no time for a life outside of work.
Explore your options
Once you understand what’s driving your decision, you might find that your issues can be resolved without moving. This might be solved with a conversation with your manager, in which you ask for more or less responsibility; an internal transfer to learn new skills; or simply by taking a break to get some clarity. If after trying these, you can’t improve your situation within the company, consider these:
- A new opportunity within the same industry.
- A similar position in a new industry.
- Taking on a completely new position in a different industry.
- Changing the type of job you have, such as moving from fulltime to contracting.
Plan your move strategically
Planning your move increases the likelihood of a smooth transition. Moving to a position that is more suited to your talents and interests can be fulfilling: however you must also consider the costs. Remember to include practical factors into your decision to move, including whether making a change will also mean a pay cut, or being out of work for a short period of time.
Then, start planning out your move by searching for jobs in Singapore. Set out to network by attending events and conferences, and speak to others within your industry, or in similar roles outside it. Be on the lookout for any new opportunities that might come along: and follow-up on short-term retraining options where you’ve found a skills gap.
Try to be patient, and persevere with the process even when things are challenging. Importantly, you’ll be stretching your limits, and if you allow yourself to go with it, the process can be invigorating. With preparation, sounds reasons, and clear goals for position, salary, challenges and growth, making a move can ultimately be just the thing you need, in order to move your career forward.
